1 ANCIENT INDIA and ANCIENT INDIA and HINDU PANTHEISM HINDU PANTHEISM The word “HINDU” comes from the Sanskrit [ancient Indian language] word for the Indus River The Hindu religion identifies the sacred not as a superhuman personality, but as an impartial, all-pervading cosmic spirit—a belief known as PANTHEISM. • Pantheism states that the whole universe is sacred. • Hinduism believes in the oneness of the Spirit but worships that spirit through a multitude of deities. THE VEDAS THE VEDAS (ca. 1500 B.C.E.) India’s oldest devotional texts [ Veda means “sacred knowledge”] teach worship through prayer and sacrifice. • The chief vedic deities are the sky god , SHIVA , and the sun god, VISHNU. THE UPANISHADS THE UPANISHADS (first written down 700-500 B.C.E.) emphasize enlightenment through medita- tion . • state that BRAHMAN is the infinite, formless, impersonal, and unknowable force of the universe, the Uncaused Cause and the Ultimate Reality. • Brahman is manifested in the individual as
