We canuse two terms to describe a body that is lyingdown: theprone positionis when the body islying face down, and thesupine positioniswhen the body is lying face up.Prone PositionSupine PositionAnatomicalPositionBODYCAVITIESANATOMICAL TERMSBODY POSITIONS
~ HEALTH CARE ~EVIDENCE 1 HUMAN BODY CAREBody planesare imaginary flat surfaces that are used todivide the body or organs to visualize interior structures.Asagittal planeis a vertical plane that divides the bodyor an organ into right and left sides. Amidsagittal ormedian planedivides the body or organ into equalright and left sides, while aparasagittal planedividesthem into unequal left and right sides. Afrontal orcoronal planedivides the body or organ into anteriorand posterior parts (Tortora & Derrickson, 2006).Atransverse planedivides the body or an organ intosuperior and inferior parts. The transverse plane canalso be called a cross-sectional or horizontal plane. Thesagittal, frontal, and transverse planes are all at rightangles to each other. Theoblique plane, by contrast, passes through the body or an organ at an anglebetween the transverse plane and either a sagittal orfrontal planeBODY PLANES
~ HEALTH CARE ~EVIDENCE 1 HUMAN BODY CAREBODY TISSUESA tissue is a group of similar cells that work together to carryout a specific function. Body tissues can be classified intofour basic types according to their function and structure:Epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscular tissue andnervous tissue.Epithelial tissueor epithelium consists of tightlypackedcellsthatformacontinuouslayer.Because the cells are closely packed, and are heldtightly together by many cell junctions, there islittle intercellular space between adjacent plasmamembranes.Connective tissueis one of the most abundantand widely distributed tissues in the body. In itsvarious forms, connective tissue has a variety offunctions.Itbindstogether, supports, andstrengthens other body tissues; protects andinsulates internal organs, among other functions.
