Geog 1112 Essay Chapter Three The atmosphere over the Earth’s surface is an extremely complicated system, one that has evolved when needed over the past roughly 5 billion years, and is necessary in order to sustain health and normal living conditions for plants, animals, and most of all humans. The atmosphere of the Earth is simply “a unique reservoir of gases” (according to the book), yet its multiple facets and components combine to create a filter for particles and light, so efficient that even cosmic and gamma rays cannot breakthrough. Unfortunately, due to human activity (in an very short time period) the atmosphere has been beginning to erode after hundreds of millions of years of relatively stable conditions. Only by first recognizing how human behavior affects the atmosphere around us can we even begin to oppose these dangerous changes. The troposphere, one of four distinct temperature zones comprising the Earth’s atmosphere, is the home of the biosphere and contains nearly 90% of the bulk of the atmosphere, along with all life forms, water vapor and clouds.
