P a g e | 1 Heidi Ramler Professor Toohey ENG 275 18 November 2015 Hua Mulan The story of Mulan is one that has been told throughout the ages in many different ways. The original tale of Mulan is said to have come from a ballad written somewhere between the 5 th and 6 th century A.D.. There is much debate on Mulan’s surname, place of birth, and time period in which she lived; the most common surnames given to her are “Wei”, “Zhu”, or most common, “Hua”. As for her place of birth, no one is really sure, but most believe that she was born in the Central Plains region of China, though some believe it would be more accurate to say that she was from northern China in one of three provinces; Gansu, Hebei, or Henan. The time of Mulan’s life seems to be the most debatable aspect of her story, some believe that she had lived during the Sui dynasty (589-618 A.D.) and others believe that it was later during the Tang dynasty (618-906 A.D.). While these aspects of Mulan’s existence will always be up for debate, there are a few things that are for sure, in China she is known to be one of the greatest heroines of their culture; every child, boy or girl, has heard the story of Mulan and will continue to tell it through out time. She shattered the roles of traditional gender norms of loyalty, patriotism, virtue, and filial piety (Confucian philosophy that is a virtue of respect for one's father, elders, and ancestors). Mulan was not born of any special circumstance, however, she was born into a family where her father believed that it was important for everyone, man or woman, to learn how to ride a horse and to use a sword.
