Growing concerns about the environment have led some people to believe that returning to a simpler way of living would stop the environmental contamination. This, however, disregards the importance of technology and inventions that we have developed over the years. Simple living has no impact on other people and does not stop the contamination from happening. Going back to a primitive way of living is far too extreme and may not be the most effective way to stop the contamination. Technology allows us to live a better life and simple living is not the most effective way of protecting the environment. As McKibben states in his essay, “Waste Not, Want Not”, there is no doubt that human beings have been far too wasteful and have been damaging the Earth for years (332). However, I believed that the society definitely has changed to where technology allows me to live a better life. I believe that our quality of life has improved by living in the society, and not outside of it. When Thoreau published Waldenduring the Industrial Revolution,
