Objective: The porpuse of this lab is to perform the Nitric Acid oxidation of benzoin to benzil and reduction of benzil to hydrobenzoin by sodium borohydride reduction. Procedure 250mg benzoin were placed in a 20ml sidearm test tube. 1.0ml of concentrated nitric acid was added into the tube this was Clamp and attached to a vacuum hose to the aspirator. The mixture was heated in a 50ml beaker of boiling water on a hotplate for approximately 8 minutes. After 2.0ml of water was added the mixture, and then cool to room temperature, and the tube was swirl few minutes to promote coagulation of a yellow precipitated product. These crystals where separated from the liquid via Hirsch funnel and washed with 2ml of cold water while still in the funnel. This were left to dry on filter paper, and their weigh was measure Filter paper weight 0.688g, paper + crystals weight 0.765g Total weight of crystals 0.765g-0.688g= 0.077g 0.25gbenzoin/ 212.25 g/mole = 0.00117g 0.077/0.00117x100= , calculate yield, and save them for the reduction step.
