Chapter 5- William Glasser’s Noncoercive Discipline Glasser makes the point that students act a particular way in order to help themselves meet their own needs. Learning should not stop during school hours, rather an effective teacher will encourage his or her students to learn about useful subjects outside of class that the student is interested to study. Teachers need to avoid teaching in ways that are uninteresting; a teacher should bring excitement to the classroom and make sure the students are stimulated and happy. To be able to make learning worthwhile to students, the students need to understand how they best learn, and teachers need to accommodate all different learning styles in lessons. As previous educational theorists have suggested, a classroom should be democratic in its rule making and setting of standards, students need to have a say in these so the students understand why the rules are created. A teacher need not play an authoritative role; he or she should be a support system for students, to help them learn. Glasser emphasizes the

To be a good teacher one should emphasize the “Seven Connecting Habits” defined by Glasser as, “caring, listening, supporting, contributing, encouraging, trusting, and befriending” (86). Chapter 8- Richard Curwin and Allen Mendler’s Discipline with Dignity Curwin and Mendler believe the key to a strong teacher-student relationship is making sure a student’s dignity is always respected and protected. Having dignity is of the utmost importance to a student. In some social systems, students value acting out or neglecting work. Teachers must realize this and encourage learning while still respecting
