FINAL REVIEW FOR GRAPHIC DESIGN Elements of Art o Line: A continuous mark on a surface by an instrument o Shape: An Enclosed Area determined by line, value, texture, space or any combination of these elements. A shape has two dimensions, length and Width. o Form: Element of art that is Three Dimensional and encloses space. Like a shape, a form has length and width, but it also has depth. o Texture: Element of art that appeals to the sense of touch. When people talk about an object as being rough or coarse or smooth, they are referring to its texture. o Space: The distance around, between, above, below and within an object. o Color: Elements of art derived from reflected light. The sensation of color is aroused in the brain by response of the eyes to different wavelengths of light. Every color has: Hue: Color name Intensity: Strength Value: Lightness or darkness Principles of Design o Balance: Arranges elements in a work to create a sense of stability o Emphasis: Combines elements in a work to point out their differences o Harmony: Combines elements in a work to stress similarities of separate but related parts. o
