In this paper I will describe how effective performance appraisals can increase employee performance, the strategic advantages of performance appraisals, the potential forms of bias within the appraisal system, and how performance appraisals can contribute to the achievement of strategic objectives. After employee selection, performance appraisals are arguably one of the most important management tools an employer has to use to their benefit.
