Introduction: Heat Treatment is a procedure in which heat or cooling is applied to metals to alter their physical and mechanical properties without changing the shape. Heat treatment can be used to restore ductility to a metal, improve machining, improve formabitlity and increase the strength of the material. The process has three basic steps. To begin, the metal is heated to a specific temperature. Then hold the metal at that temperature for a specific amount of time. Finally cool the metal in a specific manner, depending on what is required of the material. Heat treatment can be used to soften metals, harden, or modify the metal. In this experiment a plain carbon steel will be heat treated in several different ways. The hardness and impact properties of the heat treated specimens will be compared using standard mechanical tests. Theory: Microstructure has three components; composition, grain, and phases. Composition is the elemental percent weight a material has. Grains is the atoms arrangred in a specific order, for example FCC, BCC, or HCP. A material has a phase and a non equilibrium phase. A phase is a homogeneous portion of a system that has uniform physical and chemical characterstics. Non

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
