Conservation Bio Main Points 10-08-07 Genetic Modification o It is now faster and less expensive Type of Modification o Herbicide resistance o Insect/nematode resistance o Fungal/viral/disease resistance o Production of novel compounds o Improved nutritional quality o Alteration of carbohydrate metabolism o Prolonged shelf life o Male sterility o Heavy metal tolerance Seeds can be produced to be sterile, so that farmers must come back and purchase year after year o This is done so that companies gain from the other genetic modification they make onto the seeds Benefits of Genetic Engineering o Reduced soil erosion o Greater flexibility to rotate crops o All weeds and pests eliminated o Less money spent on herbicide, less time spent spraying, less soil compaction, increased yield, products are cheaper Golden Rice o Genes from daffodils and bacteria inserted to create rice that produces beta carotene o Can be crossed with rice strains that are suited to particular regions of the world
