Conservation Bio Main Points 11/14/07 Reserve Networks o General principles Ideally any system of reserves should adhere to a few key principles Four Rs of network design The system should be representative of the region in which it occurs-protect some of everything The system should be resilient to change-be tough The system should have redundancy built into it-several species that you are trying to reserve Reality: There must be sufficient funds and political will to get and manage land Reserve size Advantages of a big reserve o Support bigger population sizes o More diversity because you can represent more species o More habitat o Less edge effects in contrast to core o Entire ecosystems- protect entire river, entire system: If you only protect part of river you can have problems with other part of river bringing in bad things o Less management: More mature, bigger ecosystems may be able to function without intervention Disadvantages of a big reserve
