Function: Communication. 3. Language & culture: Forms culture regions; language is the essence of culture, most important things that define culture. 4. Language and place: Use language to show control of a place. -1664: New York was New Amsterdam before British took control of the area. -1998: Yugoslavia used to be one country but broke up into multiple countries. Kosovo tried to break off from Serbia but were stopped by ethnic cleansing until NATO put a stop to it. A.  Linguistic Culture Regions  1.
