Anatomy Chapter 28 Notes Similarities between male/female reproductive systems -Homologues: mature reproductive system structures that are derived from common developmental structures and serve a common function in adults -Primary sex organs called gonads (ovaries and testes) -Gonads produce gametes and hormones -Accessory reproductive organs -Ducts to carry gametes away from gonads towards site of fertilization -Both reproductive systems dormant until puberty -Puberty initialized when hypothalamus begins secreting GnRH (gonadotropin- releasing hormone) -Perineum -Found in both sexes: diamond-shaped area between thighs -Two parts: -Urogenital triangle -In females: urethral and vaginal openings -In males: base of penis and scrotum -Anal triangle -Location of anus in both sexes Anatomy of the Female Reproductive System -Primary sex organs are the ovaries -Accessory sex organs include: uterine tubes, uterus, vagina, clitoris, and mammary glands -Ovaries -Paired, oval organs within the pelvic cavity -Anchored by connective tissue -Each ovary is secured by mesovarium, a broad ligament, an ovarian ligament, and a suspensory ligament -Each ovary supplied by an ovarian artery and ovarian vein
