SYNTHESIS OF FIVE ARTICLES The study of the relationship between physical activity and cognitive health is of significant importance and over the last several years there have been numerous studies conducted which discuss the important changes which happen over a lifetime and the role of exercise on cognitive functioning. The authors from the Beckman Institute Department of Psychology at the University of Illinois, Chaddock, Voss, and Kramer (2012) focus their research on the positive relations of physical and aerobic activity on cognitive well-being and suggest that future research test the mechanisms for how aerobic fitness improves brain structure and the function of exercise through neuroscience research conducted on humans as much of the work has come from animal studies (Chaddock, Voss, & Kramer, 2012). Maillot, Perrot, and Hartley (2012) set out to examine the benefits of playing physically stimulated sport video games on cognitive performance, attention, and short-term memory amongst older adults and concur with current research of the need to promote physical activity as it promoted cognitive improvements in those who participated in their study. Similarly, Duvall (2012) encouraged walking programs as a means to improve cognitive awareness and calls for the need of future research to examine whether environmental factors can assist in encouraging people to engage in physical activities. Gow, Mortensen, and Avlund (2012) concur with research associating actively with positive cognitive aging as they too find success in cognitive retention during physical activity. However, they reference the need to begin cognitive testing at an early age and then follow participants over a lifespan to tests their physical cognitive abilities and activity levels over time verses testing subjects at a predetermined age and for a short period of time to gain a better understanding of exercise on cognitive retention. The work of Voss, Nagamatsu, Ambrose and Kramer (2011) looked a little differently at the connection between activity and intellectual functioning as they added the components of resistance training (verses just aerobic actively) and

SYNTHESIS OF FIVE ARTICLES younger populations (verses just an older population) in order to provided evidence as to whether a variety of types of physical exercise programs would develop brain health in both population groups. They too find holes in neuroscience research and request for greater collaboration between human and animal model studies in order to be more precise on the assessment of exercise and its effects on cognition functioning. The study of the importance of physical activity on cognitive health, one could say, should begin with an understanding of the brain. Chaddock et al.
