LECTURE: CAROL JACOBSEN - in Michigan 1 women is murdered every 5 days by a husband or boyfriend - women are sent to jail often for simply striking back against a batterer in order to save their own lives - the criminal justice system is very biased against minorities - poor people don’t commit more crime than the middle class o they just are easier to catch/ arrest - women are mostly black/ poor/ single parents - women rapes and abuse (by gaurds) were running rampant in prisons - in Michigan there have been no clemencies granted to people who were only defending themselves against batterers - there are a lot of instance of abuse going on in prisons o sometimes to the extent of death - right now in the state of Michigan it is illegal to teach college classes inside a prison - womens prisons are vastly different from mens o not as violent o raped and assaulted by gaurds instead of by others o food is worse and less o less libraries o less programs o less of everything o only 7% of the prison population
