Background The name commonly given to the military Savannah Campaign in the American Civil War. Conducted in Georgia and South Carolina from November 15 to December 21, 1864. Conducted by Major General William Tecumseh Sherman of the Union Army. His forces destroyed military targets as well as industry, infrastructure, and civilian property and disrupted the South's economy and its transportation networks. The Union wanted to cut the South in two. Union victory. Sherman uses total war. Engraving by Alexander Hay Ritchie depicting Sherman's March.

Plan of March The campaign began with Sherman's troops leaving the captured city of Atlanta, Georgia, on November 15 and ended with the capture of the port of Savannah on December 21. Sherman therefore planned an operation that has been compared to the modern principles of scorched earth warfare, or total war.
