Name: _____________ ANSWERS_ ___________________________ Class 24 Activity: Electrons in Solids PHYSICS 1200 Part I. Energy Bands Go to the web site http://phys.educ.ksu.edu/vqm/html/eband.html . Yada, yada… Set the well width to a = 0.100 nm., Set the depth at E pot = 400 eV, Set the number of atoms to 1 The separation, its original value of 0.200 nm, has no effect yet, because there is only one well. 1. How many energy levels are there in the well? 4 2. With the well parameters set as described above, change the number of atoms to two. What happens to the highest energy level? It splits into two levels. 3. Change the number of atoms to 5. How many levels does the highest level split into? The highest level splits into 5, and the next highest looks broad. 4. Decrease the spacing between atoms from its default of 0.200 nm to 0.150 nm. Decrease the spacing from 0.150 to 0.140 nm. Then to 0.130 nm. To 0.120 nm. What happens? Why does this happen? The splitting of all levels gets larger. I can see the lower levels also splitting as well. This is
