The city has a rich history andarchitecture from colonial times. Recently it witnessed askyscraper boom.Belém is also known as the Metropolis of the BrazilianAmazon region or the Cidade das Mangueiras (City ofMango Trees) due to the vast number of those trees foundin the city. Brazilians often refer to the city as Belém doPará ("Belém of Pará") rather than just Belém, a referenceto an earlier name for the city, Santa Maria de Belém doGrão Pará, and also to differentiate it from a number ofother towns called Belém in Brazil, as well as the city of
