Darwin was not the first to discover evolution, he was credited for it. o Published on the origins of species. o Points he made include : organisms change from ancestral species; natural selection, survival of the fittest.- general idea behind this is the genes that are fit the environment to survive will be carried on. Lemarck -studied fossils -wrong about acquired characteristics, ie. If one works out and gets buff, kids wont be buff.; loose arm in accident; no arms? Wrong! Charles lyell- Uniformitarianism - geological processes does not change; river happens the same before and now. James hutton - influenced darwin ; gradualism : river - very small changes make big differences over time. River washes grand canyon, grand canyon gets deeper. Five year mission to the beagle. Noticed that things are different in south America than Europe. Galapagos - shared similarities with south america. Noticed that things came from mainland somehow changed to fit galapagos.
