Paper Overview
For this essay, you will select a topic related to a global issue, then you will find an
argumentative TED Talk about this topic. You will then analyze the TED Talk’s rhetorical
situation, claim, and rhetorical strategies used. *Please note: the global issue topic that you select
for this assignment will be the same topic you will have to research and construct your own
argument in essay #2. Please be comfortable with the topic you have selected as you will not be
able to change topics (unless I have concerns over the topic).
Essay Breakdown
The essay should contain the following standard sections and adhere to the following
requirements:
 Paper Format: MLA
 Organization and Length of Essay:
o Set up essay in MLA format; it would be helpful to use the template I have
provided.
o Introduction (5-7 sentences)
 Please be sure to address these areas in this section:
 The name of the TED Talk
 The name of the speaker
 Provide a few sentences of summary of what the TED Talk is
about.
 You may also want to find out any information on the speaker that
you can to see if he/she is credible and include this in your
introduction. You should also have a thesis that explains, overall,
your decisions regarding the Ted Talk.
 Thesis Example: Lily Marker successfully uses pathos and humor to
defend her position on radio collars.
