There is an entire class dedicated to conflict management (COM442, Communication and Conflict Management), so we didn’t go into much detail on this.But one of the important takeaways that Dr. Jameson shared with us was the idea thatconflict itself is not alwaysnegative, even though our intuitive understanding of “conflict”is “BAD!” Rather, the ways we engage in conflict can be negative or positive.Collaboration is one area where conflict can be positive. Through collaboration, weshare ideas, we push back on some but not on others, and the conflict can in fact be aproductive aspect of that collaboration.SOCIALEXCHANGETHEORYis based on the notion that human beings need resources tosurvive, and we learned to exchange resources to facilitate our survival through socialinteraction. people review and weigh their relationships in terms of costs andrewards.
