3ASSESSMENT 31. IntroductionIn the report, the focus has been provided to Royal Melbourne Hospital in the wake ofthe COVID-19 outbreak and the challenges the hospital has faced due to the pandemic. In thisreport, a strategic plan has been established for the next five years to improve the businessoperation of the hospital and create strategies through models that can help the hospitalprovide better care to its patients as well as employees. Also, the hospital’s goals have beendesigned to bring improved strategies that can help stakeholders fulfil their needs.2. Strategic Issues Facing The Organisation Concerning Covid-19Royal Melbourne Hospital has faced tremendous challenges while taking care of theCOVID-19 patients due to the extensive requirements of care facilities and fulfiling patients’demands that further impacted their overall hospital operations. Some of the major issuesfaced by the company are discussed here, and the way they impacted the stakeholders are alsomentioned.Issue of overwork due to understaffing problemDue to the increasing number of COVID-19 patients and outbreaks, there have beenripple effects throughout an already overburdened system of Royal Melbourne Hospital.Ambulances transporting patients were turned away from the Sunshine as well as FootscrayHospitals, respectively. The worst-case situation would be a hospital with insufficient staff tocome to a grinding halt. Due to the issue of understaffing, workers in the hospital had toincrease their workload and had to continue with the long shift, which further impacted theirmental health (Smallwood et al., 2021). Their morales were shattering, and they remainedvery tired, which was impacting their performance. Since employees are one of the mostimportant stakeholders in a hospital, if they remain unsatisfied, it further impacts their overall
4ASSESSMENT 3performance, thus directly impacting the hospital’s reputation. This also led to increasing sickleaves every month, further enhancing pressure.Unsatisfied patientsAnother issue that the hospital faced was not satisfying patients properly. Sincestaffing was 1 to 10 patients, many patients blamed the hospital for not taking care of themproperly. Moreover, due to the increasing number of patients, the threat of not getting thecorrect tests or having the wrong tests increased (Arabi et al., 2021). Therefore, being themost important stakeholders, it further impacted the satisfaction level of patients, thuslowering the trust in the hospital, which further created challenges of maintaining a goodreputation in the market.
