Nixon’s Détente Drastically improved relations between the US and the USSR. Nixon along with NSA Director Henry Kissinger were crucial to bettering the relationships between the two nations. The Approval and willingness to follow a policy of détente was with the approval by Leonid Brezhnev of the USSR. Détente Early Success One sign the Détente was working was the(SALT) Strategic Arms Limitation Talks in 1969. President Nixon traveled to China in 1971. The visit to China by President Nixon was meant to provoke a response from the USSR. Communist Divide China and Russia were very much at odds with each other in the 1960’s. A lot of China’s issue with the USSR was the USSR’s refusal to advance development of Nuclear weapons. Détente and the Cold War President Nixon had every intention of exploiting the tension between the USSR and China.
