The alcohol which does not possess 2 identical alkyl groups attached to the hydroxyl carbon came from the ester when the pi bond came back down and "spit" out the alkoxide ion. At least two of the branches on the tertiary alcohol are identical and came from the two equivalents of Grignard used. The ester is made from the third branch of the alcohol (the first two identical branches came from the Grignard) and the other alcohol which does not possess 2 identical branches.
