Week 9 10/12/2008 15:55:00 Jack Johnson: The Bare Facts Key Historical and media facts: Championship boxing matches were consistently filmed from 1897. Films of  the matches were very popular nickelodeon and, later, theater fare By 1906, Jack Johnson becomes a viable contender for the heavyweight  crown Johnson was widely known for mocking his opponents in and out o the ring  (“Hit me here, Tommy. Why can’t you hit me here?”) In an extremely racist era, Johnson openly carries on affairs with several  white women Unforgivable Blackness Narrated by Sam Jackson Tommy Burns wouldn’t fight Jack Johnson unless they paid him 30,000  dollars Johnson was paid only 5,000 dollars The fight was December 26, 1908 in Sydney, Australia Jack London (author) was at the fight and rooting for Burns Johnson absolutely destroyed Burns; he was smiling the entire time Johnson “exposed the beliefs that Americans thought about black fighters”
