Several watershed figures and events. o Boxing has long been  key sport in creating cultural “heroes” who embody our highest values. The Heavyweight champion has long been the embodiment of American values… o Jack Johnson: The Bare Facts Sports generate their own culture and values, these values are often inconsistent with  those of the larger society. Key Historical And Media Facts Championship boxing matches were consistently filmed from 1897. Films of  the matches were very popular nickelodeon and, later, theater fare. By 1906, Jack Johnson becomes a viable contender for the heavy weight
