Betsy Distelburger 10/7/09 PL BIO 240 Quiz 1: Part 2: Take Home Critique The Biotech Century The Biotech Century: Playing Ecological Roulette with Mother Nature’s Designs by Jeremy Rifkin is a seemingly cynical article warning the general public about all of the possible dangers, even catastrophes that are soon to come. He mentions the both the short-term and long-term risks that we will all be forced to face when genetic engineering becomes increasingly popular. He starts off by saying that while this is not a completely new issue it is becoming a bigger issue as large corporations and the government are now dictating the process of genetic modification and manipulating life on the genetic level. As far as the science behind GMO’s is concerned, Rifkin explains that the first problem is that scientists cannot predict how they will respond when they are actually interacting with other living things in the environment. Then he goes on to explain that these “genetically engineered products also reproduce.” Rifkin provides several examples that
