About 1 in 4 Americans, more than 70 million, are juveniles ages 18 and younger. The
population of juveniles have steadily increased since the mid-1980s and are predicted to
increased until at least 2060. About three-fifths of arrested youth are taken to court with
juvenile jurisdiction for further processing. Because of prosecutors filing some juvenile cases in
adult criminal court, some juveniles’ cases are diverted away from the formal justice system.
Arrest statistics for juveniles are hard to record because man offense go unreported because
there are considered part of growing up.
