 Why are these women important?
Maria Theresa was the archduchess of Austria and queen of Hungary and Bohemia. She had 16 children,
one of her daughters being the future queen of France, Marie Antoinette. At the age of 23, she took the
Habsburg throne. She set out to reform and reorganize the Habsburg government functions and was a
key figure in the power politics of 18 th century Europe.
Phillis Wheatley was an African-American woman poet who was brought to Boston, Massachusetts, on a
slave ship. She soon mastered Latin and Greek and began writing poetry. She was also the first black
