However, you may also begin an argumentative essay with a moreengaging introduction-with surprising statistics, for example, or witha dramatic story.* Thesis Statement- The thesis statement in an argumentative essaystates clearly which side you are for: (the writer’sopinion)1. Curfew laws are unfair and should be abolished.2. In my opinion, stem cell research should receive the full support of our government.- A thesis statement often mentions the opposing point of view. Notice that the writer's opinion isexpressed in the main (independent) clause, and the opposing point of view is normally put into asubordinate structure.SUBORDINATE STRUCTUREDespite the claims that curfew laws are necessary to control juvenile gangs,(opposing viewpoint)MAIN (INDEPENDENT) CLAUSEthey are unfair and should be abolished.(writer’s opinion)SUBORDINATE STRUCTUREAlthough there are certainly reasons to be cautious with stem cell research or any new technologyMAIN (INDEPENDENT) CLAUSEI believe that its potential benefits far outweigh its dangers.Other examples with transition signals of contrast:1
