Chem 404 section 7 2-28-08 Equilibrium Lab 1. a. Mg (S) + 2HCl (Aq) MgCl 2(Aq) + H 2(G) b. When HCl was added the limiting reagent was the HCl (aq) . c. See appendix A for molecular diagrams 1 and 2. d. Diagram 1 is the first reaction where there was not enough HCl to dissolve all of the Mg. Diagram two is the second reaction where there was excess HCl added to the Mg, and all the Mg was dissolved with HCl left over. e. The system went to completion when excess HCl dissolved all of the Mg, there were no reactants being formed so therefore the chemical reaction could not have been in equilibrium. f. See appendix B for reaction progress diagrams, the labeled parts are as follows: i) before Mg and HCl were mixed ii) when all the Mg was used up with excess HCl iii) the very moment when more Mg was added to the excess HCl iv) when the Mg (limiting reagent) and excess HCl reacted 2. a. See appendix B for complete diagram. b.The changes in concentrations of all species occur with the addition of new substances or substances in increase or decrease during the course of the reaction. The composition after equilibrium is attained will be the same if Fe3+ is added and the solution turns pale yellow.
