Unformatted text preview: Sheldon Pope (with Allison, Eric and Lam) Bio 412 Lab Section 18 2-21-08 I ntroduction: Protists are odd organisms. Some are multi-cellular, but most are single celled. They are not animals, plants, nor fungi. These organisms are eukaryotes which mean they have a membrane around all of their organelles, and also have a nucleus. Another odd detail is some reproduce sexually, and others asexually, I guess it is their decision. The organisms within kingdom Protista that we used were; Spirogyra, Volvox, Euglena, Coralina officinalis, and Agarum cribrosum. The Spirogyra, Volvox and Codium fragile fall under the phylum Chlorophyta, which are green algae. These algae are mostly freshwater and similar to land plants. They are very diverse and range from single celled to multi-celled. These species reproduce either sexually or asexually. The phylum Rhodophyta contains red algae, the one used in this lab was Coralina officinalis. The organisms within this phylum are mostly aquatic because they are algae. These multicellular creatures reproduce sexually, with help of their cellulose, agar, and carrageenan cell walls. Chlorophyll and phycobilins help Rhodophytas gather energy and survive. Phaeophyta is a phylum which includes the algae Agarum cribrosum. The marine organisms of Phaeophyta range in size and have fucoxantin and chlorophyll c. Some have a holdfast which anchors the organism, while others might have multicellular sex organs. All store laminarin and have algin and cellulose in their cell walls. The phylum Euglenophyta has many organisms, Euglena Sp just happened to be used in this lab. These are generally freshwater organisms that have flagella.
