I. Objective: Radioactivity Lab 6 dealt with handling radioactive elements, and the objective was to review the concept of radioactivity and the three main types that occur. Radioactivity occurs when the number of protons in the nucleus does not equal the number of neutrons, thus creating an unstable element. To attempt to become stable, the element will radiate, releasing different products depending on the type of radiation—alpha, beta, or gamma (see Data). In Lab 6, a Geiger Counter will be used to measure the radioactivity of a certain substance. Using this apparatus we can also test different materials, such as a control, paper, aluminum, and lead, to detect which is better at absorbing radioactivity. In the second experiment, a computer program will be used for roughly an hour to find the half life of Indium 116, which is the time taken for one half of the initial number (N o ) of nuclei to decay. The half life is found through the equation N(t) = N
