The men encounter many new challenges that were not present in previous wars. This presents an unheard-of toll on their mental health. In reaction, they make of everything the best that they can, that is if they remain alive through trench warfare, gas warfare and heavy machinery. The novel illustrates the war’s effects on soldiers through their attempts to deny the realities of war and the resulting loss of family relationships, interests, and emotion.
