Lecture 9 February 25, 2014 Goals: Consider the ways different incentives influence policymaking Identify common violations of rationality assumptions Which option would you choose exercise (I chose in line with the miscalculating risk portion) Did Representative Boschee reinforce – or maybe contradict – anything we’ve talked about so far? He showed how much of who you know and such helps in the political stuff. Stuff that Boschee talked about is fair game for the exam! Chapter 3 (relates to incentives) Incentives “Something that incites or has a tendency to incite to determination or action” (Merriam- Webster) 1. Incentives matter for everybody (all of us are responding to incentives) a. Our choice to go to college, incentives: i. Higher starting salary ii. Being able to get a job you like and care about iii. Great place for networking iv. Opportunities such as internships, jobs v. Not having to work right away vi. Requirement to be a military officer b.
