Cook 1 Kyle Cook ENG 202 Mr. Smith 15 October 2014 Is Oedipus A Hero? Hero: A person who is admired for great or brave acts, or fine qualities. Heroes are people who are looked up to for doing good in the world, whether that be just for a few people, a whole community, or even an entire country. Present day heroes include but are not limited to firefighters, police officers, soldiers in the armed forces, managers of homeless shelters, doctors, and anyone else who does a lot of good helping others and is looked up to for doing so. A wonderful example of hero would be in “The Heroes” by Nelson Algren. This short story is a mildly humorous war story where the character who is an American-born Indian gives his opinions of enemies, fellow military men, and other war events. He talks how he didn’t believe that General Custer’s decision for his last stand was a good one, and he did a lot of typecasting of others, both on his side of the battle line, and on the opposite side. Although he has opinions that are all his own, he puts those aside in order to be a part of group for one singular goal which is to protect the citizens of the United States. This is comparable to the everyday heroes in the military today.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
