Overview WE HAVE PROVED ...THAT AFTER OUR STORES OF OIL AND COAL ARE EXHAUSTED THE HUMAN RACE CAN RECEIVE UNLIMITED POWER FROM THE RAYS OF THE SUN. —FRANK SHUMAN, NEW YORK TIMES,JULY 2,1916 Solar Energyis the radiant energy of the sun, which is harnessed and converted further into electricity and heat for use in public and private spheres. Today, it isn’t uncommon to see people use solar heaters or governments install solar-powered street lights. The solar energy enjoys the benefits of its ever-evolving technologies to use light and heat from the sun as a non-polluting and renewable source of energy. Solar architecture, photovoltaics, solar heating and artificial photosynthesis are examples of technology-driven innovations in this industry. These can be categorized either as passive or active solar technologies based on the manner in which these products harness solar energy and convert it into solar power. Active solar techniques include photovoltaic (PV) systems, solar heaters etc. whereas passive solar techniques focus on the using materials or redesigning spaces with optimal potential to use the natural energy of the sun. Solar technology products currently available in India for personal and commercial use include PV lighting systems, (solar lanterns, batteries, etc.), PV security systems (streetlights, traffic lights, metal detectors etc.), thermal systems (water heaters, cookers, space heaters, etc.) and a gamut of accessories for these products. Today solar energy is an important constituent of the energy portfolio in most countries and since India is blessed with ample sunlight due to its geographical location, it is very well placed to harness this renewable energy. In fact, it is the large magnitude of solar energy available that makes it highly appealing. A World Energy Assessment by United Nations Development Programme in 2000 calculated the annual potential of solar energy across the globe to be between 1575 - 49387 EJ. This figure is vastly higher than the total world energy consumption of 559.8 EJ in the year 2012.
