CLINICAL & ADMINISTRATIVE SYSTEMS 2 Clinical Information Systems The healthcare industry has struggled to maintain the demands of healthcare information systems. The tradition paper-based method for managing information was obsolete and subject to medical errors. The main focus” of clinical information systems is to allow quick and safe access of information, ordering cost-effective medication and treatments, and providing evidence-based care” (Hebda & Czar). The adoption of information technology has impacted the integration of clinical and administrative information systems with the capability of capturing, storage and analyzing both clinical and administrative data across the continuum of care ( One hospital information system used within healthcare is a computerized order entry system that can streamline physician’s orders. The healthcare information system utilized computerized order entry system that physicians used to enter medication orders into a computer instead of transcribing the orders. According to Miller et al.,(2003) describe a computerized order entry based decision support enhance the restructure of clinical workflows and influence how care is delivered to the patients. This literature review of Niazkhani, et al., (2009), reviewed clinical workflow as the flow of care-related tasks into four categories: 1) structuring of clinical tasks, 2) task performance coordinating, 3) enabling flow of information to support task performance, 4) monitoring. This clinical performance task is used to avoid any conflicts to the tasks or the physicians.
