Application Paper 3IntroductionThe ministers of Christ have the duty of ensuring that the word of God is preached to allcorners of the earth. While technology has made it easy to spread the good news without going toplaces in person, cultural differences pose a great threat to the work missionaries when workingin a new culture. However, various authors have published books trying to explain interculturalcommunication and what ministers need to know when interacting with people of a differentculture. This paper will critically review the bookUnderstanding Cultural CommunicationbyStella Ting-Toomey and Leva Chung and discuss five lessons learned from the book on how tocommunicate in intercultural context.Critical Book ReviewTing-Toomey and Chung highlights various factors that may influence interculturalcommunication. The information provided in their book is of great help to ministers in culturallydiverse societies such as the United States and in the international context. What and how wecommunicate is in most times, influenced by the cultures in which people are brought up. Attimes, what may appear appropriate in one culture may be inappropriate in another. The authorsalso touch on non-verbal communication and how the intended message may fail to reach thetarget audience appropriately if the existing barriers in intercultural conext are not addressed1.Other important areas addressed by the authors include understanding ethnic and culturalidentities, cultural shock, facial expressions, boundaries, and physical appearance in interculturalcommunication. I appreciate the contents of Ting-Toomey and Chung’s book because it remindsus that our diversity is expressed even in the way we communicate. As a minister, it is importantto understand that the way people talk or receive information can be influenced by their cultures.1Ting-Toomey, Stella and Chung, C Leave. Application Paper 4Cultural differences can act as a barrier in preaching the word of God, especially if the recipientsfeel that the language used undermines their cultural beliefs. Overall, the book can be said toexplore some of the basic areas of intercultural communication that are likely to be overlookeddue to how they seem obvious or less important. For example, non-verbal communication isoften overlooked but may cause misunderstanding when communicating with a person from adifferent culture.
