CHEM 1212K Freshman Chemistry Program TA Notes, Experiment 21 Fall 2015 1 Experiment 21: Thermodynamics of Borax Dissolution Post-lab Assignment or Report Sections to be included in this lab report are: Data & Results Discussion Conclusion References The lab report for this experiment is due at the beginning of the following lab period. Learning Objectives Students will be able to… Use titration of a known mass of base to determine an unknown concentration of acid with good precision (this method is called “standardization”). o Carry out good titration techniques leading to reliable data. o Use stoichiometry calculations and reactions occurring during a titration to convert from a known mass of base to an unknown amount of acid (and concentration). Use titration with a standardized solution to determine an unknown concentration. Calculate a solubility product K sp from measured concentrations at different temperatures. Determine enthalpy and entropy of dissolution using measurements of K sp at different temperatures. Talking Points for Pre-lab Discussion Discuss the dissolution equilibrium of borax that will be studied in this experiment. o o What is the form of K for this equilibrium? Ask students about this!
