SOCL 2505 FINAL EXAM STUDY GUIDE Chapter 10: Childrearing/ Parenting History of Childhood Philippe Aries- Historian on family organization Coddling period of child rearing - from 13 th to 16 th century, children were idolized and valued as a source of amusement for adults. Moralistic period of childrearing - from 16 th to 18 th century, children were to be disciplined and prepared for adulthood. Contemporary childhoods involve children being removed and protected from adult society, not approved of by Aries, refuted by most historians. Infanticide widely practiced in Europe, Eastern Europe had “killing nurses.” Abandonment popular throughout Europe, some opened foundling homes for abandoned babies. Wet-nursing - hiring another woman to breastfeed, common through 18 th century. Swaddling - wrapping baby tightly in cloth, leaving it unable to move its arms and legs. Begun to keep baby from injuring itself, saddled babies were more docile, cried less, and slept more. Large percentage of children born before 18 th century would be considered “battered”, Children viewed as wild and willful, needed to be broken. Whipping fell out of favor by the 19 th century, but is still widely used today. Childhood in Modern Times By the 20 th century, boundaries between childhood and adulthood were clearly drawn. Education improved, healthcare improved, infant mortality decreased, and life expectancy increased. Negatives include exposure and involvement in sex and violence at a younger age, and likelihood of living in poverty increased. The end of the 20 th century saw a blurring of the child/adult line, and the trying of child criminals as adults, and more teens entering the workplace.
