CHAPTER 2 NOTES Definitions ABC-X model of family stress - developed by Reuben Hill. The letter A refers to a stressful life event that’s challenges the family system, the letter B represents the skills and strategies the family possesses to cope, the letter C is the family’s perception of the event. X is the outcome of the situation, the family’s adaptation. Conflict - The disputes or disagreements that result when two or more people are struggling for control over resources. Correlational Method - The type of research in which the researchers describe and explain existing relationships. Cross-sectional (survey) - Survey data collected at only one point in time. Deception in social research - The practice of concealing or lying about the purposes of a study. Dependent variable - The outcome of interest in research. Developmental tasks - major skills that must be learned, or basic needs that must be met in a particular stage. Double ABC-X model of family stress - ABC-X plus the perception of how the stress and strain of events can pile-up, causing different coping to new stresses. Dysfunctional - When institutions and social structures have a detrimental effect on a society. Ethnographies - Data collected by anthropologists about the customs and practices of people in other societies. Experiment - a highly controlled method of attempting to demonstrate the existence of a causal relationship between two variables. Expressive roles
