English 101 August 28, 2008 Paper 3 Heroism “A hero is a man who does what he can.” - Romain Rolland. A man does every thing in his power to make things better. In Population: 485 written by Michael Perry, you will read about Michael Perry’s life living in a small town and serving on the volunteer firefighter team. He does what he can to save people, he’s a hero. A hero is a person who does everything in their power to save someone. Perry tells his story about his life in New Auburn, Wisconsin. He starts out with a story of a young woman who has been in a severe car accident. Throughout the book, he describes everything from people in New Auburn to his days volunteering as a firefighter. He uses rumor in a way that I don’t think many people could do. At the end of the book, we are introduced to a young woman named Sarah. We find out that she is the young woman who was in severe car accident and we learn her fate. Perry, to me, is a hero. He risks his life by running into burning buildings to save other people. He gives his time to save these people when he could be doing something that pays him money. Instead of receiving monetary value, he volunteers his life to these people. He is always on call, and never knows when he will be called to come to the
