Marching to The Beat of The Same Drum There is so much time and effort that goes into creating a marching show that by the time the first competition comes around everyone is more like a family that a random group of people. In all reality many times you spend more time with the people that you are in marching band with than you do with your actual “friends”. It is more than a class, more than a hobby, it is a way of life because in order to have a good band everyone must eat, sleep, breath band for four months. It takes a great deal of dedication and drive to make a great band. There are many different aspects of marching band which include: instruments, terminology, leaders, different members , and competitions . One of the main aspects of marching band is the instruments. There are many different instruments that are used. There are your low brass instruments that consist of the baritone and the tuba or sousaphone. Next in the brass family are the middle brass which are the mellow and trombone. The final group in the brass family is the high brass, the trumpets. Then we have the reed section; these are the alto, tenor, and baritone saxophone, the clarinet, the flute, and the piccolo. Another group of instruments in a marching band is the battery, also known as the drumline, which consists of snares, quads or quints, and bass drums. The finally, lets not forget the pit. The pit is made up of mallets; such as the xylophone, marimba, and the vibraphone, and toys; such as shakers, gongs, tambourines, ect. Another part of marching band is the auxiliary also known as the guard. The auxiliary consist of flags, sabers, and rifles. Members of the auxiliary use these items to portray the mood and story that the band is describing with the music. 1
