Abnormal Psychology February 22, 2007 Schizophrenia – have higher rate of suicide; recurring o “Group” of disorders o Problematic: Cognitive processes Personality disintegration Affective disturbances – difference bw emotion and observable mood Social withdrawal – don’t interact well with others o Lifetime prevalence in United States: 1% - know this!! o Earlier onset for males; women receive dx more often after age 40 o 1896 – Emil Kraeplin first identified group of sxs Dementia praecox - o Eugene Bleuler – later disagreed with some of Kraeplin’s ideas Autism – self-focus ; don’t take interest in other people Associations – unconnected ideas Affect – inappropriate emotions Ambivalence – uncertainty about actions , what should do, how perceived o Move toward more restrictive definition of disorder Delusions, auditory hallucinations, marked disturbances in thinking, affect, speech ; disorganized speech; loose associations; words don’t make sense; speak in neologisms (new words); sometimes will use word for sound; disorganized behavior; excessive motor activity or assume one position for a long time; most of time, hallucinations are not pleasant; voices aren’t pleasant, what they see aren’t pleasant; sometimes in so much distress, become suicidal Deterioration from previous level of fxing Work, relationships, self-care, etc. o
