RUNNING HEAD: Defining Abnormality Paper and Annotated Bibliography Culture In a simple way it can be said that, behavior, which is not normal, is abnormal behavior. When a person in a group behaves differently than other group members then it can be called as abnormal behavior in a simple language. People with different behavior easily attract other’s attention. Some time others are afraid of that abnormality and sometime they make fun or surprised. It’s important to make it clear a difference between abnormal and normal behavior, and to understand that it’s important to check the continuum between normal and abnormal behavior. Someone’s behavior is normal or abnormal, it depends that person’s cultural background. Abnormality in nature and behavior can vary from culture to culture. To declare some one normal or abnormal it’s important to study that person’s culture and ethnicity because one behavior can be abnormal in some culture and perfectly normal for another culture. This scenario totally depends on that person’s culture and community. For example- ADHD is an abnormality in USA, but most Asian countries, consider it very normal for a child to be restless and hyperactive. These countries believe that children are normally hyperactive and this is very normal and children should be that way. Children are hyper active because they have a lot more energy than a grown up. These cultures do not believe that hyper activeness in children is not a mental sickness. Society and cultures have some rules, which may not be printed on paper, but mutely everyone follows those rules in the society. All the community members are expected to follow those rules and regulations religiously. When some one behaves differently from the society, then that behavior causes that person to be called as abnormal, and these abnormal people are considered a threat to the society and people 2

RUNNING HEAD: Defining Abnormality Paper and Annotated Bibliography don’t feel comfortable around them. This abnormality may vary from one culture to another. One behavior may consider normal for one culture and abnormal for another. For Example- in many Asian countries touching someone while talking is absolutely normal, but this behavior is not considered normal in western culture. These cultural norms change time to time. The behavior once was not considered as normal, can be considered as normal with time. These days this time of changes easily can be seen in societies. In the beginning people may object, but then with time, they accept it and after few years it becomes the part of their culture as well. In this kind of scenario, it is hard to differentiate if the behavior should be called normal or abnormal.
