In the United States, Foodwaste has always been the most significant space consumer in our landfills as it takes up 97% ofit from farms, grocery stores, restaurants, and homes. This contrasts with the food insecurityexperienced with more than a billion individuals facing starvation. Most of the food wastes arebeing wasted unnecessarily and thrown out simply because it doesn't meet the standards ofquality product for consumers. Having the landfills overflowing with food wastes causes it toproduce methane, resulting in damaging our environment and climate change. If carbon emissionby the dumps were to be accounted as countries, they would make the third largest carbon-emitting country after China and the United States. However, there has been numeroustechnological development that help alleviate this challenge, such as the "San Diego too good togo" application developed. Instead of throwing away the food, the application connects theconsumer and charities and those in need of the donated food such as the food banks and shelteraround San Diego or be sold at a fraction of its original price.ChallengeAccording to the United States Department of Agriculture, the number of individuals whoexperience food shortages around the United States is reported at more than 25 percent. Thecovid-19 pandemic has had a critical effect on the food system, which is likely to have an evenworse impact on food security (Babbitt, 2017). Consequently, the UN Food Program haspredicted that the number of individuals who will experience food shortages will double as aresult of Covid.
