2LITERATURE REVIEWIntroductionSocial media and technology have become a useful resource and concrete staple in oursociety.Social media has become a part of everyone’s life.However, a resource that is intendedto be so useful can also be so crippling to the adolescent age group.As technology continues toadvance social media and methods advance as well.Though social media is a beneficialresource, when not handles correctly the negative impacts are ever present.The takeover ofsocial media and the effects that it has on adolescents has become a topic of interest.Socialmedia has become a prime influence in youth culture, identity, education, interpersonalrelationships, privacy, and social capital.Social media influences how an adolescent conductinterpersonal relationship.It is a direct reflection or contributor to what would be consideredappropriate communication.Social media has a direct effect on all aspects of the adolescents being.It affects theirrelationships with others, their behavior, their communication and more.Overuse of technologyand social media can lead to distraction and result in procrastination and inability for completion.The usage of social media in its excess leads to the lack or desire of in person interpersonalrelationships.Adolescent would rather text, DM, IM, or snap rather than speak.As we analyzethe platforms supported by the adolescents and the influence they hold such as Facebook,Snapchat, Instagram, and Tik Tok, they are very influential in how we communicate day to day.They have become keep components on how we stay abreast of what is going on or simply stayin touch with one another.Social media has also become very present in the classroom settingsas well.“Social media is a new pedagogical tool that may be used to engage students both insideand outside the economics classroom and impact their overall success” (Al-Bahrani, et.al., 2015,p. 36-50).
3LITERATURE REVIEWAs we begin to analyze the different platforms of social media that are used daily we seeYou Tube, Tik Tok, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and even LinkedIn.We notice there aredifferent sites used for different reasons.Certain sites appeal more to certain age groups thanothers.For instance, in the journal article written by Brooke Auxier and Monica Anderson(2021),Social Media Use in 2021,the different age brackets are addressed as to who uses what.In preparation of this article, they began conducting surveys in 2012 about the use of socialmedia.According to their research, “roughly seven-in-ten Americans say they ever use any kindof social media site – a share that hasremained relativelystable over the past five years.”(Auxier & Anderson, 2021)Since the beginning of this research there were two platforms thatremained dominant for the study Facebook and You Tube.“YouTube and Facebook continue todominate the online landscape, with 81% and 69%, respectively, reporting ever using thesesites.” (Auxier & Anderson, 2021)
