Carter racing case notes
Core issues and causes:
The core issue for Carter racing is the inability to predict when
the racing vehicle can break down. The cause is the fact that the team cannot identify the
root of the problem/malfunction. Pocono race is very important for the future of their
venture, and if successful, will bring in lots of sponsors that will be generous with
donations. Carter racing team is facing a win it or lose it decision.
Recommendations:
Carter racing should participate in the Pocono race. Paul was able to
present only one possible cause for the problem that was not based on solid evidence, but
on intuition.
We often use mental shortcuts to make decisions and
expertise is one of the most important reasons to rely on intuition. Paul
does not hold a proper engineering background, but has lots of
experience with race cars. On the other hand, Tom was not able to
